Otoplasty

Our face is the first thing people visually notice about us. Our ears rarely attract attention when normal in size and relationship to other facial features. However, protruding, large, or misshapen ears can detract from facial appearance. Children with prominent or deformed ears may suffer the ridicule of peers and a resulting lack of self confidence. If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, you may consider plastic surgery of the ear. Ear surgery is plastic surgery preformed to improve the shape, position, or portion of the ear. It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth, that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury. In general, ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem.

  • You may have bruising and swelling, causing the skin to turn yellow, pink, purple, or dark blue. This varies from patient to patient.
  • You will need to put antibiotic ointment on the incision behind your ears twice daily. If there is any tape on your incision, this must be left on at all times.
  • It is common to have some numbness, swelling and slight bleeding; this usually improves in days to weeks, but can take months to improve (especially numbness).
  • You may have to wear a facial band, which shall be left on until your follow up appointment the week after surgery.
  • You may shower 24 hours after surgery, but please allow incision behind the ears to dry thoroughly immediately after shower.
  • Avoid sun or UV light during this time.
  • If you experience extreme and sudden swelling to any surgical areas, excessive fluid/blood drainage from any surgical area, extreme pain, or a temperature of 101° F or greater, please call the office. After hours the answering service will notify Dr. Berg promptly and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
  • Call if the pain, swelling, bruising, or redness is significantly worse on one side than the other.
